This depends on the type or records. For instance, if you have bought an expensive asset or a property then it is advisable to keep these indefinitely. If in doubt, retain the records until you are sure there will be no further use for them e.g. you have sold the asset.
More specifically, records for accounts and tax purposes need to be retained as follows:
Accounting records
These would be used in the preparation of your accounts and could include your cashbook, invoices, supplier statements, bank statements etc.
These should be kept for six years after the submission deadline for the tax return. Generally, this will mean 7 years after year end.
Personal Tax
For sole traders, a partner in a business or if you have rental income then you must keep all your accounting records as well as other tax return related information, as mentioned below, for a minimum of 5 years and 10 months after the end of the tax year e.g. for 2022/23 that will be until 31st January 2029.
For other taxpayers then your records such as P60s, interest certificates, pension contributions, charitable donations, completion statements etc. must be kept for 22 months after the end of the relevant period e.g. for 2022/23 that will be until 31st January 2025.
