What is the Companies House Personal Code?
The Companies House Personal Code is a unique identifier issued to directors once they have successfully verified their identity. From 18 November 2025, this code will be required to file confirmation statements and other key documents with Companies House.
Why do I need to verify my identity?
This is part of a new statutory requirement aimed at improving transparency and security. Without verification, you won’t be able to act as a director or file documents with Companies House after the deadline.
How do I verify my identity?
There are two main stages:
- Create a GOV.UK One Login – This is different from your Companies House or Government Gateway login.
- Verify your identity – This is done using the GOV.UK ID Check app, which scans your photo ID and face.
You’ll need:
- A smartphone (if using the app)
- A valid photo ID (e.g. driving licence or passport)
- Your email address and mobile number
Do I need a smartphone to verify my identity?
Not necessarily. While the GOV.UK ID Check app is the quickest and most convenient method, there are alternative ways to complete the process. You can verify your identity online using a desktop or laptop, or in person at a participating Post Office.
